Imaginos Movie Review: "Snowpiercer"

Though the movie came out in 2013, I only just recently got the chance to partake of the film "Snowpiercer." I'm not normally the type of person to just buy a movie without having seen it first, but honestly, hearing the plot of the movie and the way so many of my friends spoke so highly of it (and these are opinions that I actually trust, mind you), I took the leap and bought it. And now, after having finally seen it, I don't regret the purchase in the slightest.  :)

"Snowpiercer," despite its majority English-speaking and American cast, is actually a Korean Science-Fiction film that is actually based on the French graphic novel series "Le Transperceneige." Now, based on that kind of lineage, you can imagine that the film either diverts heavily from American cinema sensibilities or ends up heavily catering to American sensibilities due to other nation's public perception of viewing films more highly as an art form. In this case, if you bet on the latter, then you'd actually lose.

For those that haven't heard of it, the film takes place in a future where the planet has frozen over due to a failed attempt to offset global warming, and an eccentric industrialist's fantasy project of a globe-spanning train system becomes humanity's only hope of avoiding extinction. The last remnants of humanity have been living on the train "Snowpiercer" for over 17 years and the story focuses on a specific event in the lives of the survivors in the rear of the train as they suffer the eventuality of an oppressive class system.

The most interesting part about the movie is that rather than focusing on creating a wide and varied view of life on the train, it actually keeps its focus purely on the group at the back and allows you to discover the real "diversity" of life on the train along with them. With a surprising cast with names like Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton and Ed Harris, the characters aboard the train range drastically and aren't as clear cut as you might expect as life on the train has had surprising effects on them all. And its non-blockbuster approach to telling this story truly sets it apart from other post-apocalyptic/disaster films.

The only unfortunate part of this movie is that it did so poorly in the box office. This might be due to the fact that it's not your traditional sci-fi movie, like I've previously mentioned. So if you're interested in an incredible film that bucks a significant number of traditional tropes in American cinema and thus produces a movie that is easily set to be a cult classic for movie loving audiences, check out "Snowpiercer"!

Honeycomb Hideout Double Feature: Episodes 24 and 25

Alright, 'Combies! After a few intermissions and a ridiculously busy schedule, the Hideout's back! And as a reward for all your patience, here we have two, count 'em, TWO episodes of the show in one post! We have "M2X Day 2" where Joe Cain and April Cox partake in a discussion of the convention at the halfway point and some of the cool things they'd seen so far and what they look forward to seeing. But that's not all for "Day 2"! In the second half of the episode, The Joes (Cain and Young) are joined by a couple of new friends at M2X for a lovely game of "Cards Against Humanity" and, whether you've heard of the game or not, you're in for a treat! And for "Day 3", Joe Cain's joined by Nik Emmadi who besieged his partners with his unexpected presence late in day 2. The two of them discuss a great many topics in geek culture as well as things that are good and that they'd like to see in future conventions. Also, they discuss the ever so interesting topic of "Death's revolving door" in comics as well as character turnover in many of our favorite shows. So here's the obligatory "Spoiler Warning" for any fans of "The Walking Dead", "The Superior Spider-Man" and numerous other series that you'll just have to listen to find out more about.  ;)

The Honeycomb Hideout Episode16: "THe Magical Negro" and other sociological schisms

Look, 'Combies!! Less than a month between episodes! Progress!  ;)

The gang's back on the counter culture commentary kick and they've brought some friends (new and old) to shed more light on the subject. Partake in the discussion as Joe, Mark and Nik are joined by Kelly Guillory, Jen Kitzman and Kristina Neuville as they discuss in greater depth than before an extensive range of counter culture tendencies, good and bad, discuss Pacific Rim, Matt Smith's successor on Doctor Who and the ridiculous reactions it's elicited, the concept of the "magical negro" and so much more.

Be sure to stop by the Ashur Collective to see the awesome works that Kelly and her partner are shelling out!  :D

The Honeycomb Hideout Episode 11: The Summer Rundown

What's up, 'Combies? The boys are back with a solid rundown of some of the major events of the summer. We cover the big film releases, their aftermath and what the "folks in charge" should really be paying attention to as result, as well as major video game releases still to come that we're excited about. On the more serious tip, we cover a number of the tragedies that have taken place in the past few weeks, as well as some of the possible sociological factors that contribute to these events.  That's right, we're deep and funny here in the 'Hideout! Also, enjoy the special behind-the-scenes snippit at the beginning. Yep, y'all are going to get a taste of how we at Imaginos really tend to interact, which really isn't that different than how we do on the show, but Nik didn't realize we were recording at first so that adds to the awesome! So come on down and join in the fun!

*SPOILER WARNING: We go into significant detail about the overall plot and resolution of "The Dark Knight Rises" during the show, so if you haven't seen it yet and would rather still be surprised and whatnot when you see it, hold off on listening to it until after you've seen it. If not, venture forth and enjoy!
